CANDIDATE KEY, PRIMARY KEY, UNIQUE KEY, ALTERNATE KEY, COMPOSITE KEY
How many times do we feel confused about these simple database concepts?
The answer is many a times, but I'm sure after reading this post you will never forget any of them.
PRIMARY KEY:-A primary key is a field that uniquely identifies each record in a table. As it uniquely identify each entity, it cannot contain null value and duplicate value.
CANDIDATE KEY:-A nominee's for primary key field are know as candidate key.
ALTERNATE KEY:-A candidate key that is not the primary key is called an Alternate key.
SUPER KEY :- If we add additional attributes to a primary key, the resulting combination would still uniquely identify an instance of the entity set. Such augmented keys are called superkey. A primary key is therefore a minimum superkey.
A candidate key is one that can identify each row of a table uniquely. Generally a candidate key becomes the primary key of the table. If the table has more than one candidate key, one of them will become the primary key, and the rest are called alternate keys.
A key formed by combining at least two or more columns is called composite key.
Difference..
Primary Key..
1.It will not accept null values.
2.There will be only one primary key in a table.
3.Clustered index is created in Primary key.
4.Primary key allows each row in a table to be uniquely identified and ensures that no duplicate rows exist.
Unique Key..
1.Null values are accepted.
2.More than one unique key will be there in a table.
3.Non-Clustered index is created in unique key.
4.Unique key constraint is used to prevent the duplication of key values within the rows of a table and allow null values.

A superkey of an entity set is a set of one or more attributes that, taken collec-tively, allows us to identify uniquely an entity in the entity set.
